What is your book about?
This is a gripping tale that hits like a southern summer storm as you dive into the 1960’s controversies of Atlanta, Georgia where two young men of opposite color find themselves defying the odds and tackling the raw chaos of hate and greed.
What inspired you to write your book?
I personally met the two main characters, Dr. Johnny Savage and Otis Ikner, 25 years ago sitting on the banks of the Choctawhatchee River and began listening to the outrageous true stories of their experiences together while fighting for the rights of American’s both black and white in Atlanta, Georgia. Death threats, near death experiences, a desire to be successful and defining relationships brought these two unlikely men together making an impact on lives across the south. Their story was so profound and politically charged, that I knew it had to be told and shared with America.
Can you describe your writing process? How did you get your book written and how long did it take?
Once I started listening to Johnny and Otis’ stories, I like many others found ourselves hungry for more of their experiences during this period of their lives. I began recording their stories, then going back and listening to the recordings. One day it hit me like a ton of bricks! This was a book of great substance sharing a deep meaning that offers significant value in today’s world. I dedicated ten years to writing this profound and impactful book full of danger, adventure, even murder, drama, and believe it or not, comedy and romance.
What was your publishing process like? How did you publish your book and how long did it take?
In 2022 I started out with Archway Publishing Company who offered many services which included editing, legal advice, marketing and of course the printing of the book which took approximately one year. I was pleased overall with the process; however, there were a few typographical errors that was going to cost more than I thought it should to make the corrections. I found Archway a large company with a large turnover in employees leaving me working with different people which led to a feeling of being lost in the crowd. This year, in 2025 I turned to Prime Publishing. For me, this company offered more when it came to revising my book with corrections made. They also offered a better marketing strategy which included the revamping of my website and multiple postings on social media.
How do you hope your book impacts the world?
This is one book, one journey and a lifetime of lessons that could have taken place anywhere, anytime in the world. This powerful true story is universal in that it shows how the spirit of humanity and true friendships can rise above adversity and teach the deep meaning of compassion, love, friendship, and respect for people of all colors and walks of life.
Are there any people and/or books that have inspired you along your journey?
My greatest inspiration was having the privilege to work with Dr. Johnny Savage who is now 91 years old, and the late, Otis Ikner who passed away on April 10, 2022, right after the book JOHNNY AND JAZZBO was published. I tell everyone that I am just the messenger. Johnny and Otis lived to tell the story of courage, survival and triumph. I suppose there are three books that I can say did have an impact for me. In some way they were the encouragement I needed to keep writing my book. The three books are, “The Help”, “The Butler”, and “The Green Book”. As a matter of fact, I have had several book club groups tell me that JOHNNY AND JAZZBO is The Help, The Butler and The Green Book on steroids!
What’s next for you?
Well, I am proud to announce that my book JOHNNY AND JAZZBO recently won an International Impact Book Award in the non-fiction division. And I am now working with a movie producer in L.A. on a screen play. My first published book TWELVE DAYS IN BOTSWANA was published in 2017. And now, with five-star reviews and encouragement from so many readers, I am excited to move forward with two more books coming out soon. The titles are, “A NIGHT AT CRACKER BARREL” AND “RIVER RUN.
What advice would you offer fellow authors who are just getting started?
Never, never, give up. Don’t worry about the technical part at first and write from your heart. When I write, I concentrate on the story, and the meaning behind the words. Then, I go back and edit, edit, edit. Enjoy the journey!
