What services do you offer?
Voice Over Vermont / The Audiobook Experience is a boutique recording studio with a focus on audiobook recording and production. We work with authors from all over the United States to create audiobook editions of their memoirs or other non-fiction books using their voices. We also work with hundreds of professional narrators when the project warrants a special voice (many works of fiction would fall into this category).
Who are your ideal clients?
Independent authors who want a voice in how their audiobook is created. Whether they decide to narrate, or trust us to find the perfect narrator, we make sure to check in every step of the way. We love our authors, and they love us right back.
How did you get started in your business?
I started my career in publishing as the National Sales Manager for a small independent publisher in VT in 1991. Fast forward through raising 2 children, doing family programming at the library and being a founding member of the Children’s Literacy Foundation to 2008 when I opened my recording studio. I recorded my first book in 2010 and have been growing steadily ever since. Since the beginning of 2024 I’ve already recorded/produced 36 books – with more on the schedule!
What are some common issues you help your clients with?
Determining the right reader for their book, setting up a solid home recording environment with equipment I provide, figuring out how to incorporate visuals into the audiobook, and uploading files to distribution platforms.
Can you recommend any books or resources to other members?
Writing for Audiobooks: Audio First for Flow and Impact by Jules Horne
Can you offer one “pro tip” to our members?
I can offer TWO – as they pertain to both audiobook recording and public speaking:
#1 SMILE even if you are recording all by yourself. A smile warms the tone and immediately engages the ear.
#2 PUT A CORK IN IT. Without going into too much detail about the science and physics behind it, I encourage you to read a paragraph with a cork in your mouth. Then take it out and try again. You’ll be pretty amazed.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
I love hearing people’s stories. That is why I do what I do.
What’s next for you?
This business (both mine and audiobooks in general) is growing year over year. I anticipate hiring another fantastic producer in the year to come to help us keep getting audiobooks out into the world!
